Men's 1st Team Bounce Back

Castle bounce back in the Premiership

After the disappointment of last week’s defeat in the final match of the AEGON League season, Castle’s first men’s team travelled to tackle the mighty Leicestershire Club, one of the favourites for the County League, on their own courts.

Team Captain and Club Coach, Alex Guzder, juggled his players in the hope of returning to winning ways by pairing himself with Angus Osborne and Tom Hall with Oliver Nolan, while Harry Winter partnered Devan Vadhia.

The new combination of Hall and Nolan got the visitors off to a flying start taking their opening set against Ian Thomas and Gary Howard 9-6, but Winter and Vadia had a torrid time against the much fancied home pairing of Adam Popowicz and Timothy Davies, losing their opener 1-9. Fortunately for Castle hopes, Guzder and Osborne were inspired. Every bold shot they made came off: a 9-8 set win with the aid of a tie-break decider put their side 2-1 up at the break.

Stung by this reverse, Leicestershire came storming back in the second round of matches. Both their first and third string combinations secured points for their team, but again skipper Guzder was given excellent support by Osborne. Another tie-break went the same way, leaving the match evenly poised with one round to play.

At this stage or the match, a real team effort saw the Castle side seal a remarkable win against one of the pre-season favourites for the Premiership crown. Ashby’s number one pair of Nolan and Hall shaded a titanic battle with the top home combination of Cloke and Fowler, winning 9-7, while Winter and Vadhia came good at the right time, recording a comfortable 9-3 scoreline against their opposite numbers, Thomas and Howard.

The considerable icing on Ashby’s cake was skilfully applied by Guzder and Osborne who battled their way through to yet another tie-break triumph. Guzder commented afterwards “It was one of those evenings in which everything we tried came off. They don’t happen often!”

As as result of their latest success, Ashby stand second in the premiership table. Their next  match on the Castle courts is scheduled for   Starting at 6:15 p.m.
