ASHBY CASTLE LAWN TENNIS CLUB
DECEMBER 2011 NEWSLETTER
With Christmas nearly upon us it’s time for another newsletter to keep you all up to date with what’s going on at the club. There is much to report including the main points of interest at the AGM, match results and what’s happening on the social scene. But first:
A message from our newly elected President Rob Shields.
I would like to thank all the members at the AGM for voting me in as President for the forthcoming season. 2012 will be my fortieth year as a member and 23 years since I was last on the committee. In that time there have been many changes from grass and red shale courts to artificial grass all with floodlights and our superb clubhouse and surroundings. It is a privilege to hold this position and to be able to work with the new committee in a well-run club in a location that is, in my opinion, the best in Leicestershire.
A message from our newly elected chairman, Nicola Walsh.
When I was first approached to stand as the chairman for the tennis club my first reaction was ‘Isn’t there anyone else who could be considered as my tennis isn’t that good’. Then I reconsidered and decided that if ever there was a year to be a chairperson of anything vaguely sport related it was the year of the Olympics. Having accepted that there was no one else suitable and that no-one really cared that I was not a brilliant tennis player I accepted the job but with several conditions attached.
  • A chair and not a bar stool is provided for me at all meetings
  • A full length mirror is bought and fixed in the Ladies’
  • The Mens’ Captain is my partner in next years mixed handicap (it is my only chance of winning) or as an alternative I am guaranteed a decent partner in the first round of the Fun Mixed.
  • That the bar always stocks at least one bottle of Watneys brown ale, not chilled.
  • And that we have DECENT music in the bar on Friday nights (illegally if the cost is still prohibitive)
  • No pictures of me appear on the web site (dressed or undressed)
  • That all committee members understand totally and completely THAT I DO NOT TAKE MY TENNIS TOO SERIOUSLY.
  • Any parties, I am invited.
  • And finally ALL male members will have to accept that I am probably the best MAN for the job.
Having now been elected and had the new committee agree my conditions (the terms will come later) I am now extremely daunted by the task in hand. However I look forward to an interesting year ahead.
I will endeavour to work with the committee to see us through the difficult times of the recession and remain financially healthy, to ensure that the club maintains a high profile in Leicestershire and beyond, create social events that bring us closer together and that the courts, grounds and clubhouse are well tended to and remain at the heart of all we do.
I shall try hard not to aspire to any sort of vision other than to do my best for the benefit of us all.
May I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Healthy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone playing some tennis in the months ahead.
Nicola Walsh November 2011
AGM
At the AGM held at the Club House onThursday24th November over 40 members gathered to discuss many issues. A new committee was voted in and so it was time to say farewell to some members who have served the club so well over the past few years. Jayne Mansfield resigned as chairman, a position she has held for several years and she was thanked for the sterling job she has done. Colin Micklewright, Claire Upson , Dave Rankin and Lynne Bozeat all received well deserved thanks for all their hard work for the club and a list of the new committee members is included here. We have lost a few players as they have moved on to University but during the year we have used about 15 juniors in the Men’s teams. Hopefully the experience they have gained will help us in the coming season. The standard of the juniors and their excellent behaviour is a credit to themselves and the coaching team. We have used boys as young as eleven years old and the number of boys with great potential is going to be an asset to the club in the future.
A report from Claire Upson, last year’s Ladies’ Captain.
Firstly I would like to give a big thank you to all the Ladies and Mixed captains who have made my job very easy. They all have worked very hard at getting their respective teams out, have sorted any problems themselves and basically just got on with the job. The season has been one of mainly staying steady. We have been able to include the up and coming juniors across most of the teams and I would like to say their input in terms of their tennis standards and their mature behaviour has been a credit to Jon and the club. Hopefully they have enjoyed the experience gained in senior match play and will continue to do so next year.

Report from Jonathan (Head Coach)
Junior teams have performed brilliantly resulting in various team successes across the age groups. We won the U9, U16 boys and girls and U18 boys titles, plus runner-up in the U12s. James Ison also made the main draw of the road to Wimbledon event. Several Junior players also established themselves in the Senior teams.
Open Day saw a large numbers of families come down and experience the club which resulted in a large uptake of membership (approximately 30). Hopefully this will become an annual event.
2nd year sponsorship achieved from NFU Mutual which has seen several of our mini tennis players benefit from a subsidised coaching package. Big thanks for their continued support. The Club continues to show a great support for the Juniors which is reflected in the welcoming atmosphere players receive at Ashby. I would like to thank my coaching team – Tom Hall level 3, Alex Guzder level 2, Rich Beesley, Harry Bennion, Tom Redfern, Max HL all level 1, plus assistants Alice, Tom Benfield, Lucie, James Wagstaff, Tom & Ben Hurst and David Hill. I would also like to thank the Junior Coordinator Lynne Bozeat for all her support shown to me and the juniors of the club. She will be a hard act to follow.

ACLTC - AUGUST NEWSLETTER

Hi Everyone,

I’m not sure if it’s just me but are you noticing a buzz around the club these days? Maybe it’s that the weather has been kind bringing people out to play. Or is it the swelling ranks of minis, juniors and adult players enjoying the outstanding coaching provided by Jon and his team. Maybe it’s the recent massive influx of new members stimulated by the recent supremely successful open day, or possibly our terrific social calendar and the consistent wonderful image we have in the town and across the region.

This morning Sunday 21st August at 10am all the courts were full with a vet’s match, two familes enjoying a knock, two gent’s single and a men’s doubles.

The feeblest attempt at a joke this morning goes to Andy ‘Doc’ Cole. Bob Woods blasts a ball past him down the line leaving Andy stranded at the net. A polite question is raised asking if the ball was out. ‘Well In’ is the response. Doc asks if that is a town in Hertfordshire...

**

Whatever it is that’s going on at the club, it is great.

One story that sums up everything we do was the couple who came to the Open Day in the middle weekend of Wimbledon and vowed to seriously consider joining the club with their youngsters. A few weeks later on our mini-junior fun afternoon they were at an event in the castle grounds and overheard the festivities  - hockey, frisbee tennis and skittles plus an excellent disco by Chris Gamble and a sumptuous B-B-Q. They soon found themselves leaving the casle grounds and joining in the fun and are now amongst our newest members.  Historically we have been exceptionally consistent in annoying the Castle custodians with our parking now we are poaching their customers!

For so many people ACLTC becomes the source of new and often life-long friendships and members really know how to throw a good party. Freddie Winter celebrated his 21st with a Spectacular bash at the family’s farm. Those who had the good fortune to be there may well have not remembered it the next day...

The last item in this bulletin (see below) will inspire your curiosity to a fever-pitch especially if you are a fan of detective stories and consider yourself a super sleuth. Can you solve the murder in the Ashby Castle Lawn Tennis Club murder mystery evening  “Steam Nights in Ashby”?  A spectacular night at the Lyric rooms at the Christmas masquerade ball gives you that chance...

So since it has been a while since the last newsletter sit back, enjoy a cuppa and this Summer’s ACLTC newsletter. There is a lot to report so here goes!

James  Ison again has worked hard to earn his place to play at Wimbledon in August representing Leicestershire. The Road to Wimbledon is an annual event held by the Lawn Tennis Association. One boy and one girl from each county in the Under 14 age group will travel to the prestigious All England Tennis Club in Wimbledon  to play against the best players of his age from all over Great Britain. The winner becomes a national champion.

James won the first round of The Road to Wimbledon Competition at our club and progressed to the County Finals held at the Dan Maskell Centre in Loughborough. On August 14th again James, accompanied by his proud parents. Well done James for your achievements and representing your family, the county and of course ACLTC. We wish you every success.

ASHBY CASTLE LAWN TENNIS CLUB ‘S OPEN DAY

Over 60 adults, teenagers and mini/juniors enjoyed a wonderful Open Day during Wimbledon fortnight. The Coaching team led by Jonathan Lawton utilised 6 of the all-weather courts to introduce newbies, veterans and people returning to this wonderful sport to a series of skills mini-classes, practice sessions and some fun games on a glorious sunny afternoon. Jayne Mansfield commented "It is wonderful to see so many new people of all ages enjoying tennis at ACLTC". After 90 minutes
on court the participants relaxed with refreshments including, in typical Wimbledon fashion, a complimentary bowl of strawberries and cream. To conclude the afternoon 4 club performance athletes and long-time club members; Tom Hall and Joshua Bozeat took on Alex Guzder and Harry Bennion in an exhibition doubles match. This was a real treat as the appreciative crowd watched a series of breathtaking attempts to replicate the Andy Murray 'through the legs shot!'.

It was agreed that this day was a great success. We have gained 30 new members from the day and it has been decided that it should become an annual event.

Jayne thanked everyone who helped out on the day. There was a new member’s club night for everyone who joined this season on Friday 19th August in conjunction with Presidents Club night . Reports suggest the new members appreciated a relaxed and informative evening learning all about the club, meeting fellow members and enrolling in the club tournament.

ASHBY TOWN TOURNAMENT

Ashby Castle LTC held its annual Town Tournament in July. This marked the 80th year the tournament has been held and despite a slight dip in entries the week proved to be highly successful once again. There were some amazing matches across the events, entries came from across the East Midlands and as far away as Essex; all watched by enthusiastic audiences from the club balcony including an excellent Mens singles semi-final between the young pretender Harry Winter and stalwart of the event Steve Stroud. Harry ran out the winner and went on to defeat last year’s winner in the final, Chris Wilson, in another fine 3 set match. The week went very well weather wise
allowing all the matches to be played without disruption until Finals day – 15 finals to complete and well done to all the players for putting up with heavy showers and gales throughout the afternoon and evening. Tournament Referee and organiser Jayne Mansfield thanks all those involved in the event and hopes we can attract more players next year.

Full results can be found on the club website – simply visit the galley.

At the time of writing 13 juniors have just returned from Swansea for their second week competing against many of the UK's finest in Swansea.  Jon (head coach) has been taking his charges to Swansea for many years. This year is the second time that a selection of our minis and juniors have been pitched against many of the UKs best players.

Going on tour as an adult or child is often the source of the fondest memories and Swansea is becoming the week the players most look forward to. Jon is reported to have been pleased with their progress and this year three of our boys made it to u/16 doubles finals with Tom Redfern  emerging victorious. Wow! Well done to all – keep stepping up...

Ashby Castle Lawn Tennis Club (ACLTC) e-newsletter May 2011

Saturday May 7th – (pm)

As we write this latest newsletter we are in the midst of a titanic Mercury Cup clash where teams representing the top mixed doubles teams in the county battle it out to progress in this prestigious tournament. Last year we reached the final. Maybe it will be one step further in 2011. First of all we need to beat Charnwood. Currently it is 3-3 with three matches on court. Tom & Kate, Jon & Hannah and Jayne & Alex are working hard to win the tie...

It is 5.52 pm and sadly we lose the 8th match of the scheduled 9 – it’s 5-3 to Charnwood and no way back for ACLTC.

Jayne & Alex are a set ahead in the consolation 9th match on court 5. The clock ticks passed 6pm and ACLTC secure the last match, well done Jayne and Alex. Better luck to the Mercury Cup squad  in 2012.

Today also sees the beginning of the ‘Road to Wimbledon’ where the juniors battle it out with the top 2 boys and girls in the tournament progressing to compete across the county and eventually the country with the best playing on the hallowed courts a few weeks after Wimbledon fortnight. You may remember that James Ison carried the flag all the way to SW19 for ACLTC in 2010.

At the conclusion of the day again James Ison and for the first time Tom Hurst as runner-up are on their way to Wimbledon. In the ladies Naomi Guzder and runner up Harriet Gamble will progress. We wish them well in future rounds.

In the clubhouse the plumbing is emitting a rather curious noise – it sounds like a very depressed and mildly constipated rhinoceros. [or so I imagine one would sound. Ed.]

The season is well underway in the leagues, men’s and women’s practice nights, refurbishment of the courts, new members and an ever growing number of minis and juniors enjoying the excellent coaching.  As the weather improves we see more admiring glances from passers-by at the immaculate condition of the courts, club house and grounds with one or two new additions – the sign on the clubhouse telling the world who we are and the new green screens on court 2 carrying the
banner of our main sponsors NFU Mutual.

Drinks machine

A brand new electronic glass fronted soft drinks vending machine is on order and will be with us shortly. It offers an increased range of new exciting products as well as saving 70% in electricity costs. The prices will be competitive compared to nearby shops.

Many of the products are plastic bottles many with the popular sports caps. There are some canned drinks which we kindly ask members not to take onto the court as a spillage can damage the court surfaces.

The old unreliable Britvic machine has been transported to the nearest Air Force firing range. The local Wing Commander has thanked us for giving the Typhoon aircraft a worthy target. ACLTC members were seen at the viewing platform watching the carnage through their binoculars as an
Exocet ‘blew the bloody door off’ the machine scattering cans and bottles to the four winds. Cheers were audible across Ashby.

*****

Recycling

Shortly we hope to offer recycling facilities (probably wheelie bins) for plastic bottles and cans.
We urge members to cooperate by not using the ‘on court’ bins but to use the recycling bins.
This will save the club money as well as cut down on the waste we send to land fill.
