TOWN TOURNAMENT

As we speak the players are assembling for the Thursday evening matches in the annual acltc Town Tournament.

Every year the standard of play is right up there with the best the region has to offer. An excellent opportunity to make yourself comfortable on the club house balcony or the courtside patio
and enjoy an evening drink and a light snack as you marvel at the skill and athleticism of these talented men, women and juniors playing singles, doubles and mixed.

Like Wimbledon the last Friday and the Sunday are the most popular times to watch. The semi-finals are played during the evening of Friday 16th July from 6pm and finals on the Sunday (18th) - with the minis in the morning and all finals of minis, juniors and adults in the afternoon.

EVERYONE is welcome so please bring yourself, your relatives and friends to enjoy the best tennis the region has to offer!

On the final Sunday the tennis equipment supplier WITHERS will be present with a sale of rackets, bags, balls, clothing, shoes and other assorted tennis items.

AND THERE WILL BE A FABULOUS TEA!

March 2010 News from the chair – Jayne Mansfield

Hopefully all that white stuff has finally disappeared, the sun is shining and the summer season is approaching fast.

Congratulations must go to Katie and Claire who have worked hard with both the Committee and the Coaching team to achieve Club Mark. This is a ‘kite mark’ awarded by the LTA, which signifies that the club meets all the standards and   recommended guidelines on how to run a club in terms of its tennis programmes, policies and procedures, communication processes with members and club management. It is also a necessity when applying for any local authority, government and LTA grants, which might be available to us.

Over the last couple of months I have attended various events, in January I had the pleasure of attending the Leicestershire Awards Evening where we collected several trophies and certificates for Ashby. We were also privileged to hear the very interesting and amusing John Inverdale speak. As a Derbyshire Vets player I attended the Derbyshire Presentation evening – a grand affair with 360 attendees, a meal, speeches and entertainment – looks like Leicestershire will be looking to do something similar next year.

The Leicestershire AGM was lively as it followed up the debate begun earlier around the new scoring system for the summer leagues; news to date is that this has been shelved for this season.

More recently we were approached by NFU Mutual (Ashby) with a proposal to become involved with Ashby Castle LTC for this season; the Committee took some time and care deliberating over and amending these proposals before agreeing to accept them. You will see their logo on the new attire of our first Men’s & Ladies and all Junior teams, and they will also be the main sponsor for the Town Tournament this year. In particular NFU Mutual were keen to provide a Junior Coaching Bursary to be made available to Juniors selected by a panel comprising of a Trustee, Head Coach and a representative from the NFU.The Committee and I are happy to have them on board for this season; our meetings with them have also led to two new members for the season.

Please note there will be a lot of activity down at the club during the week beginning March 15th when the courts are being refurbished and new carpet is being laid in the clubhouse – apologies for any inconvenience caused.

May I take this opportunity to congratulate some of our members on their ‘nuptials’ – Sarah Upton at Christmas and Chris Vernon’s at the end of March.

As I write Laura, this year’s Social Secretary is getting the Dinner Dance under way I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.

My best wishes for the season and please come and speak to me if you have anything you wish to discuss regards Ashby Castle LTC.

Jayne

Ashby minis and juniors represent the county!

Ashby Castle are very proud to have 3 of their 10&U players , Hatty Johns, Angus Osborne and Kieran Ward , selected to represent Leicestershire in the annual 12 Counties Championships which take place at Corby Indoor Tennis Centre over the winter months. Ashby's James Ison  was also selected to play in the 14&U team event, having in previous years played in the 10&U and 12&U squads.
In this competition each County fields a boys and a girls team in the under 10, 12,14,16 and 18 age categories and their final group placings earn points which are combined to give an overall result at the end of the season.

In December James Ison was selected to play at No3 for Leicestershire 14&U team alongside Chris Egan- Morris,Ryan Plamer, and Danny Murty in group 2A against opposition from Gloucestershire, Shropshire and Northamptonshire. The Leics squad played some tough opposition and finished 3rd in the group with James scoring a well earned rubber beating Shropshire's Ben Kirk in 2 straight sets.

Ashby's Hatty Johns was then selected to play at No 3 for Leicestershire 10&U girls on the 27th February and started her campaign with a very closely fought first match against Gloucs Megan Brown eventually losing 4-1,1-4 10-6 in the tie break, then went on to convincingly beat Alice Cooper from Shrops 4-1,4-0 to give Leics a 3 - 1 win. Leicestershire girls all played well during the day and deserved their final placing of first in the group earning 4 points for the county.

Kieran Ward and Angus Osborne were selected for the Leicestershire Boys 10&U team on the same day and came up against some highly rated opposition from all 3 counties. Leics went down 3 rubbers to 1 against Gloucestershire , tho Kieran had a close 3 setter against Tom Carter  before finally losing 0-4,4-2,2-10. Angus had a close game against Jordan Evans of Shropshire before losing 5-3, 4-0 whilst Kieran again went to 3 against Peter Vale, coming back from a set down to run out as the winner 2-4, 4-1, 10-7 to score Leics only rubber against Shrops. Angus and Kieran both played well against their opposite numbers in Northamptonshire and won 4-2,4-1 and 4-0,4-0 respectively helping Leics win through by 3 rubbers to 1.  Leicestershire gained 3rd place in the group and so scored 2 points towards the cumulative total.

Leicestershire are currently lying in 1st place overall in the competition with 23 points, followed by Gloucs on 19, Northants on 18 and Shrops on 17 , with just the U18 teams to play the last rubbers on the 27th March for the final placings to be decided.

It was the first time that the Ashby 10&U trio have been selected to play for their County, they all played well and felt that they gained valuable high level matchplay experience as well as making a solid contribution to Leicestershire's overall score. James, at 13 years of age, has done well to be selected for Leics top class 14&U team . Ashby Castle Tennis Club would like to congratulate all 4 players on a great achievement !!

Proud ACLTC minis! Hatty Johns front row 2nd from left, Kieran Ward front row 3rd from left and Angus Osborne back row far right.
